Gandhinagar, Gujarat's capital, sits on the western bank of the Sabarmati River about 23 km from Ahmedabad and is one of India's few fully planned cities, laid out in the 1960s on a grid of numbered sectors modelled partly on Chandigarh. Akshardham Temple, its best-known landmark, is a pink sandstone and marble complex built by the BAPS Swaminarayan sect, centred on a 108-foot-tall monument carved with intricate friezes and housing a gold-leafed murti of Swaminarayan; the complex also includes exhibition halls, a stepped garden and a musical fountain that runs in the evenings. Beyond the temple, Gandhinagar's wide tree-lined avenues, the Sabarmati riverfront and the Indroda Nature Park give the city a quieter, greener character than its larger neighbour Ahmedabad.
