Weligama Bay's wide, gentle waves make it the most popular place in Sri Lanka to learn to surf, and the town is lined with surf schools and beginner-friendly board rentals, in contrast to the more advanced breaks nearby at Midigama and Hiriketiya. Just off the coast sits Taprobane Island, a small private island with a colonial-era villa that can be rented out. Weligama is also where you'll spot Sri Lanka's famous stilt fishermen, perched on poles just off the beach, a traditional fishing method that's now largely kept alive for photographs and tips from tourists. The name means 'sandy village, ' and at around three hours from Colombo, it works either as a stop on the way to Mirissa or as a base of its own for a few days of surf lessons.
