Lansdowne was established in 1887 as a cantonment town and remains the regimental centre of the Garhwal Rifles, one of the Indian Army's oldest infantry regiments. At around 1, 706 metres, it sits quieter than most Uttarakhand hill stations, partly because cantonment rules limit late-night activity and loud music. Bhulla Tal, a small artificial lake built by the regiment, and Tip n Top, a viewpoint over the Himalayan foothills, are the two spots most visitors walk to first. The War Memorial and regimental museum give a sense of the town's military history, while St. Mary's Church, dating to the British era, sits among oak and pine forest.
