Hazarduari Palace, built in 1837 for the Nawab of Bengal, is Murshidabad's defining sight: a three-storey Italianate structure with, as its name suggests, a thousand doors (only a hundred of which actually open), set on a 41-acre campus that once served as the seat of Bengal's last independent rulers. Nearby, the Katra Mosque (1724) and the Jahan Kosha cannon, cast for Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, round out a town shaped almost entirely by 18th-century Nawabi history. Murshidabad sits on the Bhagirathi river, about 200 km north of Kolkata, and is usually visited as a full-day or overnight trip built around its palace and mosque complex rather than natural scenery.
