Umngot River, Meghalaya Overview
The Umngot River is famous for a simple, almost unbelievable trick of the light: on a calm day, its water is so clear that the wooden boats crossing it seem to float in mid-air, hovering over a pebbled riverbed metres below. Boatmen near the Dawki bridge and further upstream at Shnongpdeng ferry visitors along short stretches between limestone hills that mark the India-Bangladesh border. The river is at its most transparent between November and February, once the monsoon's silt has finally settled.
